There's vowel rhyme (assonance), consonant rhyme, internal rhyme, and more. If you google "kinds of rhyme," you can read up on them. And there's an excellent book that may help you with poetry in general: THE TEACHERS AND WRITERS HANDBOOK OF POETIC FORMS (high school level and up, I'd guess).Gail Carson Levinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10098487903686296931noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8275604993904054741.post-41922343247549557912011-11-01T17:20:25.261-04:002011-11-01T17:20:25.261-04:00Thanks, that'll be helpful, I'm sure!

Lately I've taken to writing inspirational poems and I just wondered if there are any techniques or common mistakes amateur poets make. I've been experimenting with different rhyme schemes (AAA, ABAB, AABB, ect.) but aside from that, I'm clueless! Just curious if you had anything to say.writeforfunhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15182389667164062711noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8275604993904054741.post-77154315710547002582011-11-01T17:06:32.543-04:002011-11-01T17:06:32.543-04:00I'm doing the young writers nanowrimo. I also changed my e-mail. I used to be Emma, but now I'm writeforfun.

Great post! I had Lexi's problem exactly in my last book, although in my current one, I’m having M.K.B.’s problem. I’m with Lexi, though; how do you know where to put those important backstories, the ones that are pivotal to a character? Is there any way to know, or do you just put it where it seems “right”?writeforfunhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15182389667164062711noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8275604993904054741.post-11615476894146247722011-10-31T16:17:09.329-04:002011-10-31T16:17:09.329-04:00This comment has been removed by the author.Melissahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12793052470477585815noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8275604993904054741.post-51904856699378161002011-10-31T11:39:47.821-04:002011-10-31T11:39:47.821-04:00Me too! (Most of what you know about the characters + world is below the surface, never seen, but it holds up the rest.)

Lexi, I ask myself "Is this related to what's going on right now?" If a character has a need or intense want to know about something, the reader will want to know too. The time to mention that Character A is an EMT, 55 years old, who almost died of bee-stings when he was 12, is when he has to rescue the extremely large barbarian warlord who's passed out on top of a bee's nest. ;)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8275604993904054741.post-33205589875255632612011-10-27T13:26:56.778-04:002011-10-27T13:26:56.778-04:00From the website:

Unfortunately, I'm still not really sure how much to add, but this clears the water a little. Some of the backstories would add a lot of depth to the story, although I'm not sure where to put them in, but you're right, others would probably just get in the way of the story. Thanks for your thought-provoking post!
LexiGail Carson Levinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10098487903686296931noreply@blogger.com
